“Downlight replacement” can mean three very different things.
One or two lights keep failing
Flicker, buzzing, drop-out and poor dimming can come from the fitting, driver, connection or dimmer. The LED itself is not always the cause.
Best fit: fault check and targeted repair.The house has old or mixed fittings
We check cut-out sizes, output, colour and switching so the replacement set looks consistent and works together.
Best fit: like-for-like or whole-area upgrade.The room has never felt right
More downlights are not always the answer. Placement, beam angle, glare control and separate switching can do more than quantity.

Labour only, before materials. This is the usual range for straightforward downlight replacements. The rate per light depends mainly on the quantity and access.
Fault finding, new wiring, new holes, unusual cut-outs, ceiling repairs and dimmer changes are priced for the work required.

Two downlights can look identical and behave completely differently.
The face of the fitting is only the visible part. These are the details that decide whether the finished job feels good and keeps working.
Driver & dimmer
The fitting and control need to be compatible for stable, quiet and smooth dimming.
Beam & glare
A recessed, well-controlled light is easier on the eyes than a bright disc at the ceiling.
Output & spacing
We plan around where light is needed, not a generic grid or a fixed number per square metre.
Colour & CRI
Colour temperature sets the mood. Colour rendering affects how timber, paint, food and skin actually look.
Cut-out & ceiling
Existing hole size, ceiling condition and access determine whether the replacement will fit cleanly.
Insulation rating
We confirm the fitting classification and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the ceiling conditions.
IC-4 matters, but it is not a quality score. It addresses how a suitable fitting may interact with insulation. Driver quality, flicker, glare, dimming and colour still need to be judged separately.

The LED downlight questions I get asked most.
Do all of my downlights need to be replaced?
Not necessarily. If a fitting, driver or dimmer can be repaired or matched cleanly, we will recommend the smaller job. Broader replacement makes more sense when fittings are ageing together, mismatched, obsolete or repeatedly failing.
Can you quote from photos?
Photos, an approximate quantity and a description are often enough for an initial recommendation. We will tell you if a site visit or further inspection is needed before a final quote.
What if my existing cut-outs are an unusual size?
We check the cut-out before choosing a fitting. Depending on the size and ceiling condition, the cleanest answer may be a suitable replacement, a purpose-made adaptor or a planned ceiling repair. An oversized trim ring should not be the last-minute solution.
Can you install downlights I have already bought?
Yes, where the fittings are compliant, suitable for the location and compatible with the existing controls. We can also supply fittings we know and support as part of the job.
How long does a replacement take?
A straightforward like-for-like whole-home replacement can often be completed in one day. New layouts, access issues, ceiling repairs or circuit changes may take longer and will be scoped before work starts.
Are IC-4 downlights always the right choice?
IC-4 fittings are designed so suitable insulation can abut and cover the fitting when installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. We still check the ceiling, insulation, location and product instructions before specifying or installing a fitting.
Will the electrical work be tested and certified?
Yes. LED Solutions holds ACT Electrical Licence 2009974 and is fully insured. Electrical wiring work is tested and the relevant Certificate of Electrical Safety is provided for the work completed.
